I like watercolor because for me it is an immediate medium that allows me to approach the subject matter spontaneously, which appeals (usually harmlessly) to my impetuous side. I am attracted to a broad range of subject matter; elements common to all of them include interesting line, stark contrast, and a soupcon of cosmic mystery. I work intermittently, with only a vague idea at first of how I want the painting to develop. With luck, this idea solidifies in a way that pleases me as I continue. If it doesn't, well, watercolor materials cost a little less than those called for by other painting media, so discards aren't as economically painful. And when I am working I am unaware of time and whether my knee hurts.
